After finding myself interested in visiting Thailand, I started to do some research about the best places to stay. I knew I wanted to go to Bangkok, as that’s where things happen in Thailand, but I wasn’t too sure where bae and I should stay.
Luckily, I got in touch with someone who recently traveled to Bangkok with her boyfriend – a couple, similar to us. Now, our interests in Bangkok might not align, as the traveler went there for work-related purposes, but she was very helpful in suggesting a hotel.
Her preference was Shangri-La Bangkok – a series of hotels that I’m actually familiar with. They have branches in several countries, so I was immediately excited to learn I could have that luxury experience they offer when you go to Thailand.
I was able to get some really helpful info from the traveler, and decided to do a quick review of what I think of Shangri-La Bangkok.
So, in this review, I’m first going to tell you a bit more about my conversation with the traveler, and then I’ll also give you my thoughts and views on Shangri-La Bangkok. In short: It’s amazing and definitely worth every buck!
A Traveler’s View of Shangri-La Bankok
The traveler who was willing to talk to me about her and her boyfriend’s experience in Thailand gave me a few answers when I asked her about her stay.
First, I should note that she didn’t use much of the hotel’s amenities, but rather did things off-premises most of the time.
I quote her on this: “Didn’t do much at the hotel, all excursions were away “
However, she had good things to say about the hotel itself. When I asked her how she felt about the rooms and the room services, she responded: “Room service was amazing. Room was really nice, 5 star.”
She provided a couple of photos of the food they enjoyed and some of their sightings, which really helps to give a more first-person perspective on the area.

And let’s face it – that’s some real soul food for you there. And soul food is definitely one of those things me and bae add to our bucket list.
My Thoughts About Shangri-La Bangkok
After seeing those sights and, of course, the great food, who can resist not wanting to go there, right?
But, as I mentioned, she and her boyfriend didn’t use much of the hotel, so let’s take a closer look at what you can expect if you decide to dine at Shangri-La Bangkok and take advantage of everything they have to offer.
First, you have to admit that the hotel is located in the perfect place. It’s situated alongside the riverfront and was designed to be a retreat. It’s an iconic hotel in Bangkok and is highly recommended among travelers, especially those who enjoy luxury stays.
They actually have a couple of room types to choose from:

- Wing Deluxe Balcony Room
- Wing Horizon Executive River View Suite
- Wing Two Deluxe Rooms Connecting
As you can see, it’s great for black couples traveling together – but can even be an idea choice for families who want to take a vacation.
The rooms are really nice, that’s something I definitely agree with. The decor is modern, but still holds true to the traditions that you’ll notice throughout Bangkok and Thailand in general.
Then, there’s the dining experience that the hotel promises.
One problem that we, as a couple, often face when we’re traveling is a limited selection of dining options at the hotels we stay. That usually means we have to jump onto Google or Trip Advisor to find a good place to eat.
Shangri-La Bangkok actually has this covered, as there are a couple of dining experiences you can access.
For international cuisine choices, visit the NEXT2 Cafe, or if you’re in the mood for some authentic Chinese dishes, then the Shang Palace Chinese Restaurant is a good choice. There’s also the Chocolate Boutique for those with a sweet tooth, and the Lobby Lounge if you’re in the mood for a drink.
Of course, sometimes, we want to wine and dine in luxury – and if that’s your thing, then you can head over to Volti Tuscan Grill & Bar. They’re definitely not the cheapest on the list, but it’s well worth giving the authentic Italian dishes they serve a try. And no, the menu isn’t filled with just pasta.
Exploring Bangkok Outside Shangri-La
Whenever we take a trip somewhere, we always look out for opportunities to go on adventures – that’s what makes these vacations so special. We make memories whenever we decide to head out somewhere new.
So, of course, we have to explore things outside of the Shangri-La Bangkok hotel.
Luckily, there’s a lot to do in Bangkok – even for black couples traveling together.
For those who want a better view of the city on the first day, there are a couple of day trips and tours available. In fact, there’s even a night tour that shows you what Bangkok looks like at night – and it’s really vibrant. I would, however, suggest you consider taking the two-hour Bangkok Canal Tour. You see so much on the boat, and it’s really fun.
If you’re into an adventure that takes you into the forests of Bangkok, then you might want to look at the Bangkok Jungle Bike Tour.
Other than this, there are cooking classes, markets, canoeing, and several other places to visit. It’s definitely a good idea to plan things out before you go to Bangkok. That way, you’ll have your daily itinerary to follow, instead of trying to find a way to see it all before you go back home.
Conclusion
Bangkok is a vibrant and lively city, and when it comes to hotels, there are many options that you can pick from. However, the Shangri-La Bangkok might be one of the best choices the city has to offer. With several restaurants and even the ability to take up in-house cooking classes, the hotel treats you to a life of luxury.
